Obituary for Bertha Louise Magnuson

Rockford - Bertha "Bert" L. Magnuson, 86, of Rockford, passed away Tuesday evening, October 3, 2006, in Rockford Memorial Hospital. Born July 14, 1920, in Green County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Rose and John Derendinger. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1939, attended Lakeland College, and graduated from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, Milwaukee in 1944, followed by basic training at Camp McCoy. During WWII, she was in the Army Nurse Corps with service in the Philippine Islands and served in the Army Nurse Reserve Corps until 1953. In 1949 Bertha graduated from University of Wisconsin. She was a nursing instructor at Rockford School of Practical Nursing Rockford Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1983. Bertha married Donald R. Magnuson on July 14, 1952, in Second Congregational Church. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary before Donald died in 2003. She was a 50+ year member of Second Congregational Church, a member of Veteran Foreign Wars and the Corona/John Ericsson Lodge (IOS).

Bertha is lovingly survived by her children, Paul (Nancy) Magnuson of Wheeling, Mark Magnuson of Machesney Park and Joan (Steve) Johnson of Rockford, grandchildren, David Magnuson and Collin and Michelle Johnson, sister, Helen Baumgartner of Belleville, Wis., brother, George (Connie) Derendinger of College Station, Texas and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bertha was also predeceased by a brother, Donald Derendinger.

Special thanks to her elite group of doctors and their staff, including Dr. Moore, Dr. Sankaran, Dr. Maynard and Dr. Klazura for their care and compassion. Also, great appreciation to Metro Medical staff and Rockford Memorial Hospital doctors and staff.

Funeral Information

Service is at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 7, 2006 with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until service time, in Second Congregational Church, 318 N. Church St., Rockford; the Rev. J. Michael Solberg will officiate. Burial in Arlington Cemetery, in Rockford.
