Obituary for Bradley "Brad" James Whitlock
Bradley “Brad” James Whitlock of Rockford, IL, 62, passed away from complications of COVID at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford on December 26, 2020, after his wife and children said goodbye. He was born January 22, 1958, to James Robert and Barbara Kay (McNinch) Whitlock in Sterling, IL. He graduated Co-Valedictorian from Winnebago High School in 1976, earned B.S. in Computer Science, summa cum laude, from Northern Illinois University, and M.S. in Computer Science from North Carolina State University.
Joyfully married for 41 years to Sharon (Meyers), beloved daughters Evangeline Rose Whitlock and Charity Joy (Whitlock) Hendrickson, son-in-law Jonathon Ryan Hendrickson, grandson-to-be-born Ryan James Hendrickson (Spring 2021), parents James and Barbara Whitlock, brother Brent Whitlock (Ellen), niece Amanda, nephew Wil, sister Jayme Whitlock Singh (Pete), nephews Iann, Evan, Quin, uncle Carroll and aunt Kathie Whitlock, cousins Eric, Todd, and Matthew, uncle Warren and aunt Karen Maseman, cousins Kathryn and Lang, brother-in-law Gregory Meyers.
Brad considered himself a “collector of hobbies” and enjoyed an eclectic array of activities. These included figure skating (ice dancing, synchronized skating), making Rosaries, collecting typewriters, lapidary, music (guitar, banjo, and dulcimer), games, reading (especially science fiction), comic books (Clyde’s Comics and Fantasy Shop in Rockford), live theatre, road trips, and spending time with family and friends. He often said that his favorite thing was being a father.
As a young teenager, Brad asked Jesus Christ into his heart and served his Lord faithfully in and out of church. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Rockford for 16 years.
The family thanks the medical personnel and pastoral staff at OSF for caring for Brad with skill and compassion in his final days and who continue the fight against COVID. Special thank you to Nurse Carolyn, who mingled her tears with the family’s after Brad left this world.
Memorials will be established for the Rockford Skating Club and for Holy Family Church in Rockford.
Funeral Mass at Holy Family Church, 4401 Highcrest Road in Rockford on Thursday, December 31, at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Phillip Kaim officiating.
