Rockford - Clayton H. Shugars, Jr., 75, of Rockford, went to be with his Lord Saturday night, March 25, 2006, in his home, surrounded by his family. Born August 20, 1930, in Rockford, the son of Clayton H. and Nellie Mae (Meador) Shugars, Sr. A 20-year career seaman, Clayton served in the U.S. Navy from February 24, 1948 until January 30, 1969. He served his basic training in Great Lakes, the Naval Air Station in Whiting Field, Fla., attended U.S. Naval Air Technical Training Center in Memphis, Tenn., served three years sea duty on the USS Pine Island, "P5M" School in Calif., served in Adak, Alaska, advance technical training in Memphis, served with the Airborne Early Warning Squadron One in Agana, Guam and Barbers Point, Hawaii during the Viet Nam War, then at the Naval Air Station in Glenview, and completed his duty at the station in North Island, San Diego, Calif. Clayton married Mary Margaret Harris on October 15, 1949. Later they divorced. Clayton married Annabelle Millard on November 1, 1983 in Monroe, Wis. He was first employed by Linden Brothers Heavy Equipment Construction, worked heavy construction at the Byron power plant, and then was employed by Chrysler, retiring in 1985. Clayton was a member of Faith Center, VFW Ross-Pearson Post 5149 of Rockford, Moose Club of Belvidere, and William R. Marks Post 904 American Legion of Loves Park. He loved to hunt and fish.
Clayton loved family gatherings and will be greatly missed by his surviving family including his wife, Ann Shugars, of Rockford, children, Geary (Beth) Shugars of Henderson, Nev., Peggy (Charlie) Teeters of Rockford, Susan (Marty) Palm of Winnebago and Bob Millard of Rockford, grandchildren, Ethan and Zachary Shugars of Henderson, Adam Teeters of Rockford and Dustin, Nicholas and Brandon Palm of Winnebago, and Kendra Millard of Rockford, sister-in-law, Ellie Brookman of Las Vegas, Nev., special friend, Billy Matherly of Rockford, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Clayton was predeceased by his parents, sister, Virginia Mortenson, half-brother, Archie Brookman and half-sister, Nellis Ahrens
Funeral Information
Service is at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2006, in Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago, with Pastor Michael Rauner officiating. Burial in Willwood Burial Park in Rockford. Visitation 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2006, in the funeral home.
