
Winnebago – Darlene Hazel Carlson, 91, of Winnebago, passed away Monday, January 8, 2018 at Manor Court in Freeport. Born March 11, 1926 in Rockford, the daughter of Emil and Ada (Dahlberg) Dahlgren. Graduated from Hononegah High School in 1944. Darlene married her husband of 62 years, Warren Walter Carlson on October 2, 1945 in the Shirland Methodist Church. She was a member of Middle Creek Presbyterian Church for 68 years serving as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. A founding member of the Village Center Incorporated in Winnebago which was an all-women’s group that focused on preserving the Winnebago downtown. Was a 4-H leader, active in American Field Service (AFS) and was a surrogate grandma to the Kantorei Choir in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Darlene enjoyed raising orchids and being a member of the Blackhawk Orchid Society in Rockford with her husband Warren. She was an avid gardener, master seamstress, artist and the ultimate crafter. Darlene was proud of her family and dearly loved by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Darlene is lovingly survived by her children, Ann (Michael) Cunningham, Kristine (Daniel) Bomgarden, Bruce (Sharon) Carlson; daughter-in-law, Merri Carlson; twelve grandchildren; twenty four great-grandchildren; sisters, Carolyn Rhyner, Lois (Don) Lowe; several nephews and nieces; AFS daughter, Luisa Pece of Bologna, Italy.
Darlene is predeceased by her parents; husband, Warren Carlson; son, Richard Carlson; brother, Emil Jr.; sisters, Dorothy, Viola, Joyce.
Funeral service 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 15, 2018, at Middle Creek Presbyterian Church, 12473 Montague Rd., Winnebago with Rev. Dr. Anita Stuart-Steva officiating. Interment at Middle Creek Cemetery near Winnebago. Visitation 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 14, 2018, at Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago.
