Beloved Husband, Father, Grandpa and Great-grandpa

Winnebago - H. Donald "Don" Gilbert, 87, of Winnebago, died Sunday afternoon, September 18, 2011, in his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born December 18, 1923, in Wapella, the son of Harry and Sophia (Kesecker) Gilbert. Graduated from Winnebago High School in 1940. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. Don married Darlene Null on May 23, 1947, in Winnebago. He was a salesman for APV Crepaco, Rockford, for over 20 years. Don was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and Winnebago Lions Club. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed traveling, reading and watching Winnebago High School sports and the Chicago Cubs. He dearly loved being Grandpa and Great-grandpa and was active in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren's everyday life.

Don is lovingly survived by his wife of 64 years, Darlene Gilbert of Winnebago; children, David Gilbert of Rockford, Dennis (Lynn) Gilbert of Mesa, Ariz., Darla Taylor of Winnebago and Don Gilbert of Defiance, Ohio; grandchildren Jennifer (E.J.) Laster, Christopher Gilbert, Victor (Maria) Villarmea, Teresa (Jason) Ackerman, Tara (Matthew Odorowski) Taylor and Kimberly Gilbert; great-grandchildren, Ryan Ackerman and Jesselin Laster; brothers; William (Virginia) Gilbert and Glenn Gilbert; several nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Jim Calvert. He was predeceased by his parents; son-in-law, Chris Taylor; grandson, Troy Taylor; brother, Robert Gilbert; and sisters, Helen (Leo) Dolan and Rhea (Bill) Fitzgerald.

Funeral Information

Service is at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 24, 2011, in Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago, with the Rev. Steve P. Shullanberger, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Winnebago, officiating. Burial in Winnebago Cemetery. Visitation 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 23, 2011, in the funeral home.
