
Obituary for Donald J. Smith
Winnebago – Donald J. Smith, 89, a retired Winnebago farmer, died suddenly on Monday, January 8, 2018 at his home. Born January 28, 1928 in Rockford, the son of Arthur James and Lillian (Jacobsen) Smith. He attended White School and graduated from Winnebago High School in 1945. Donald married Doris Elaine Moate on July 25, 1951 in the Durand Methodist Church. A veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean War from March 22, 1951 to March 21, 1953 in the B Battery 75th AAA Gun Battalion as a radar repairman for the air defense that protected the U.S. Capital in Washington, DC. Donald lived 62 years and farmed 39 of those years on his great-grandfather Ed Smith Sr.’s first farm on Osborne road that Ed purchased in 1868 after he immigrated from Aurora Canada in 1863. Donald was a member of Middle Creek Presbyterian Church near Winnebago for 77 years.
Donald is lovingly survived by his wife, Doris Smith of Winnebago; son, William (Loretta) Smith of Winnebago; daughter Julie Smith of Winnebago; grandsons, Don (Nicole) Smith of Pingree Grove, Jacob Anderson (Laura Olson) of Plano; great-grandchildren, Austin Smith of Winnebago, Donny and Miakoda Smith of Pingree Grove; sister, Beverly Hayenga of Winnebago; several nephews and nieces
Donald is predeceased by his parents; brother, Stanton Smith; sister, Ellen Kopp; grandson, Zack Smith.
Funeral service 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018, with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Middle Creek Presbyterian Church, 12473 Montague Rd., Winnebago with Rev. Dr. Anita Stuart-Steva officiating. Arrangements by Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago. Interment at Middle Creek Cemetery near Winnebago.
