
Obituary for Elmer B. Black
Peoria - Elmer B. Black, 89, of Peoria, died Wednesday morning, March 12, 2008, in P.A. Peterson Center for Health, Rockford, after a short illness. Born in Donnellson, on October 16, 1918, the son of Albert and Mary (Myers) Black. He graduated from Hillsboro Community High School in 1935 and then graduated from the apprentice toolmaker program of Caterpillar. He served in the Navy Civilian Machining Corps during WWII. Elmer married Madeline Ohrt on February 8, 1942, in St. Charles, MO. He retired from Caterpillar Inc., in 1962 as a planning engineer. Elmer lived most of his life in the Peoria area and was a member of the Masons for 59 years, Illinois Lodge No. 263, in Peoria. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.
Elmer is lovingly survived by his four children and their spouses, John and Sherrie Black of Empire, CO, Ben and Paula Black, of Winnebago, Bonny and Robert Miskinis of Cape Cod, MA, and Mary and Gary Belcher of Bellingham, MA; seven grandchildren, Brian (Shannon) Black, Jeff Black, Kara (Corey) Anderson, Eric and Ben Belcher, Erica Black and Lisa (Jason) Hamilton; and seven great-grandchildren.
Elmer was predeceased by his parents; wife, Madeline, on September 18, 2000; son, Charles Duffy, who died in Vietnam in April 1967; brothers, Albert and Bob Black; and sisters, Mary Black and Ruth Benny.
Funeral Information
At Elmer's request, cremation rites have been accorded. A private graveside service will be held at Donnellson Cemetery in April.
