
Obituary for Elsie M. Westphal
LOVING MOM & GRANDMA
Rockford - Elsie M. Westphal, 87, of Rockford, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, February 19, 2015, from her home, following a short illness. Born January 16, 1928, in Winnebago, the daughter of Walter and Florence (Weber) Carlson. Attended Winnebago Grade School and Winnebago High School, graduating in 1945. She then graduated from Rockford School of Cosmetology and was a beautician at D. J. Stewart's beauty department. Elsie married William "Bill" Westphal on February 13, 1949, in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Rockford. She also worked at C.V. Weise, Bergner's for eight years and for National Retail Services as a sales representative. Music was a great part of Elsie's life. The three Carlson sisters sang for the soldiers at Camp Grant, and entertained with the quartet in the minstrel show. Elsie was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, having served as president of its Women's Mission Society and was instrumental in organizing St. Paul's Ladies Guild. She sang in St. Paul's choir for 48 years and also sang with the Rockford Lutheran Choral Union. Elsie also was a member of the Winnebago County Home Bureau, served with the Winnebago County 4-H Fair Board, served as a 4-H leader and enjoyed being part of the Monday Niters Club.
Elsie is lovingly survived by her husband of 66 years, Bill, daughter, Diane (Wes) Newman of Winnebago; grandchildren, Kyle and Melissa Newman; great-grandson, Kowen Newman; daughter-in-law, Grace Westphal of Machesney Park; brother, Raymond (Janice) Carlson; sister, Jean Meissen; brother-in-law, Harold Bridgeland; sisters-in-law, Lois Westphal, Letica Carlson and Darlene Carlson; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; son, David Westphal; grandson, Karac Westphal; brothers, Warren and Roger Carson; sisters, Ruby Bridgeland and Harriet Dickinson; sister-in-law, Carolyn Westphal; and brothers-in-law, Floyd Dickinson, Ted Meissen, and Robert and Richard Westphal.
Funeral Information
Service is at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 24, 2015, in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 600 N. Horsman, Rockford, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial in Winnebago Cemetery. Visitation 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, February 22, 2015, in Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago.
