Winnebago - Elsie Marie Johnson, 73, of Winnebago, died Tuesday afternoon, August 17, 2010, in OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, Rockford. Surrounded by her family, Elsie went to her heavenly home after a very courageous battle with cancer. Born December 10, 1936, in Rockford, the daughter of Henry and Theresa (Liebich) Thurow. Attended Winnebago High School. Elsie married Gene D. Johnson on July 14, 1956, in Pecatonica and was blessed with four wonderful children who were the light of her life. A hairdresser since 1955, Elsie cultivated many dear friends. Attended St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Rockford. She cherished every moment with her grandchildren, living life and laughing often.
Elsie is lovingly survived by her husband, Gene Johnson; children, Gene (Wendy) Johnson Jr. of Pecatonica, Jim (Karen) Johnson of Winnebago, Diane (Mike) Capriola of Winnebago, and Dan (Jill) Johnson of Winnebago; grandchildren, Nicky (Jeremy) Doner, Gene Johnson III, Jerika Johnson, Michael and Bishop Capriola, and Mackenzie, Zachary and Jacob Johnson; great-grandchildren, Aiden Doner, Wyatt and Breyah Johnson; brothers, Jack (Betty) and Carl (Sue) Thurow; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents.
Funeral Information
Memorial service is at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 21, 2010, in St. Anthony's Church, 1010 Ferguson St., Rockford, with the Rev. Robert Melnick officiating. Visitation 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 20, 2010, in Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago. At Elsie's request, cremation rites were accorded.
