Obituary for Erma Irene Hayunga
German Valley - Erma Irene Hayunga, 77, of German Valley, died Sunday evening, March 18, 2007, in FHN Memorial Hospital, in Freeport, after a sudden illness. Born August 23, 1929, in rural Forreston, the daughter of George and Effie (Krum) Kielman. Graduated in 1947 from Forreston High School. Erma married Herbert G. Hayunga on October 23, 1948 in the Prairie Dell Church parsonage in Shannon. She worked side-by-side Herb, a lifelong German Valley farmer. Erma was employed as a cook for 12 years at Stephenson Nursing Center, in Freeport. She was an active member of Silver Creek Reformed Church and its RCWM. In her youth, a pitcher, Erma enjoyed playing softball along with her sister, a catcher, in summer leagues traveling throughout Illinois. Singing has always been an integral part of her life as she was active in Silver Creek's church choir and music groups.

Erma is lovingly survived by her sons, the Rev. Dr. Harlan (Verlainne) Hayunga of Sioux Falls, SD and James Hayunga of German Valley; grandchildren, Tricia, Brock and Drew Hoogestraat of Sioux Falls; brother-in-law, Robert Althoff of Forreston; sister-in-law, Mable Kielman of Wildwood, FL, and several nieces and nephews.

Erma was predeceased by her parents, brother, Lester Kielman, sisters, Orletta Schrader and Mildred Althoff, and her husband, Herb Hayunga, on January 26, 2004.

Funeral Information

Service 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 22, 2007 in Silver Creek Reformed Church, 326 S. Bunker Hill Rd., German Valley with the Rev. Randall P. Knoll officiating. Burial in Silver Creek Cemetery, in German Valley. Visitation 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2007, in Genandt Funeral Home, 145 Church St., German Valley.
