Obituary for Frank C. Granstra

Pecatonica - Frank C. Granstra, 75, of Pecatonica, loving husband, father, son and brother, died Friday night, April 1, 2011. Born February 11, 1936, in Grand Rapids, Mich., the son of Frank and Sophie (Grochoski) Granstra. He spent his childhood in Harbor Springs, Mich., graduating from Harbor Springs High School. Frank attended Michigan Tech University in Houghton, and graduated form the University of Miami, Fla., with a degree in engineering.

Frank married Valerie Bonz in 1961 and is survived by his wife, Valerie; daughter, Cameria (Neil) Granstra-Pereira; father, Frank Granstra; brothers, Walter (Mary) Granstra and Ron (Beverly) Granstra; and sister, Barbara (Jerry) Rosevear. He was predeceased by his mother.

Frank served his country in the U.S. Army, in Korea. He and Valerie were Peace Corps volunteers in Malaysia. He also served his community as a library trustee for the Northern Illinois Library System and was a frequent volunteer in Pecatonica. As a final contribution upon his death, Frank donated his eyes as part of the Illinois Life Goes On donor program.

He worked as an engineer for over 30 years with Texaco, in Beacon, N.Y.; Standard Oil, in Cleveland, Ohio; and Hamilton Sundstrand, in Rockford. Frank enjoyed aviation as a private pilot, was a passionate reader, especially of espionage and history, an avid sports fan, tennis player, and most of all he enjoyed his family.

Funeral Information

Formal funeral services will not be held. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
