Garelt Samuel Stahl, 78, of Seward, died Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford after a short illness. He was born April 9, 1944 in Rockford, the son of Garelt and Evelyn Nellie (Baker) Stahl. He graduated from Winnebago High School in 1962. He was a veteran of the United States Army Reserve serving from January 13, 1965 to December 31, 1970. Garelt married Lois Marjorie Lyford on September 17, 1966 at Willow Creek Presbyterian Church of Argyle.
Garelt worked at the Winnebago Service Company in Rockford and then began living and farming on the family farm near Seward in 1970. He was a member of Grace Valley Christian Reformed Church near German Valley, the Winnebago County Farm Bureau, President of Twelve Mile Grove Cemetery and was Trustee for the Seward Township beginning 1969 and then was Supervisor for over 25 years. He enjoyed attending his grandsons sporting and music events and morning coffee with farmers and friends. Garelt never met a stranger.
Garelt is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lois Stahl of Seward; daughters Lisa (Todd) Nalley of Rockford, Lynette (Ryan) Rummel of Seward; grandsons, Curtis Rummel, Sam Rummel, Tyler Nalley, Logan Nalley; sister, Katrina Shelton of Huron, SD; several nephews and nieces.
Garelt is predeceased by his parents, Garelt and Evelyn Stahl; brother-in-law, Richard Shelton.
A public visitation and fellowship will be 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday, December 31, 2022 at the Seward School Center, 2970 Tracy St., Seward, IL. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established for the Seward Park District.
Private interment at Twelve Mile Grove Cemetery near Pecatonica with Pastor Eric Schlukebir of Grace Valley Christian Reformed Church near German Valley officiating.
