Byron - Gerard J. "Lefty" Lichter, 76, of Byron, died Saturday night, October 4, 2008, in Rockford Memorial Hospital, after a sudden illness. Born October 31, 1931, in Chicago, the son of Arthur and Gorgonia (Wegener) Lichter. Graduated from Pecatonica High School in 1949 and attended Michigan State University. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Gerard married Shirley Nailor on November 3, 1956, in St. Mary's Rectory, in Pecatonica. He worked five years for K-C Soil Service and then was a Sears service technician and manager for 32 years. Gerard was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church, in Byron, and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing and was "Mr. Fix-it".
Gerard is lovingly survived by his wife, Shirley Lichter of Byron; children, Elizabeth (Randall) Jurasek of Byron, Lawrence (Debbie) Lichter of Kuna, Idaho, and Thomas Lichter of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.; grandchildren, Nicholas and Alex Jurasek, Matthew, Curtis, Eliza and Hannah Lichter, and Hailey, Grayden and Casey Lichter; sister, Mary Borgmann of Rock City; brother, Leonard (Nancy) Lichter of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by parents; brother, Robert (Wanda) Lichter; and brother-in-law, Virgil Borgmann.
Funeral Information
Mass of Christian Burial is at 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 10, 2008, in St. Mary Catholic Church, 220 E. Second St., Byron, with visitation 3:00 p.m. until service time; the Rev. Monsignor Aaron Brodeski, pastor, will officiate. At Gerard's request, cremation rites will be accorded. Private burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, in Pecatonica.
