Obituary for Jean Pauline (Carlson) Smith-Meissen
Winnebago – Jean Pauline (Carlson) Smith-Meissen, 93, of Winnebago, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Rockford Memorial Hospital following a short illness. Born May 16, 1924 in Rockford, the daughter of Walter and Florence (Weber) Carlson. Graduated from Winnebago High School in 1942 and from Hamilton Business College. Jean worked as a secretary prior to marrying Harold J. Smith on February 17, 1946. Harold died on March 9, 1977. She married Theodore J. “Ted” Meissen on September 2, 1989. Ted died on May 27, 2011. A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winnebago and former member of Middle Creek Presbyterian Church near Winnebago. Also a member of the Winnebago County Farm Bureau and Westfield Community Center. Jean believed strongly in volunteer work and volunteered many years at Rockford Memorial Hospital and the Rockford Rescue Mission. Jean was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and actively engaged in running the family dairy farm for many years. She most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Jean is lovingly survived by her son, Mathew (Deborah) Smith of Winnebago; grandchildren, Jim (Nichole) Smith, Susan (Bill) Newkirk, David (Audra) Smith, Jon (Lorna) Smith, Jacob Smith; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Madison and Micah Smith, Zackary and Caleb Newkirk; brother Ray (Jan) Carlson of St. Joseph; brother-in-law, Harold Bridgeland of Rockford; sister-in-law, Leticia Carlson of Topeka, KS; stepchildren, David Meissen, Dennis (Jody) Meissen, Debra Kramar, Diana Bryant; many nephews and nieces.

Jean is also predeceased by her brothers, Warren Carlson, Roger Carlson; sisters, Harriet Dickinson, Ruby Bridgeland, Elsie Westphal; great-granddaughter, Lindsey Smith.

Funeral service 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church, 208 W. Winnebago St., Winnebago with a visitation starting at 9:00 a.m. with Pastor Carroll Smith officiating. Interment at Middle Creek Cemetery near Winnebago. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established for the Winnebago School District. Arrangements by Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N.
