John R. Bruning, 92, of Winnebago, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2023. He was born November 16, 1930 in Pecatonica Township the son of Albert John and Jennie Tilley (Albertus) Bruning. He graduated from Pecatonica High School in 1948. John served in the United States Army from February 18, 1952 to January 26, 1954 in the Service Company, 8th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division in Frankfurt, Germany.
John married Sherrill Kay (Fogel) Pyper on February 11, 1972 at St. John Lutheran Church in Pecatonica. They were married for 51 years enjoying many great times and their farm in Winnebago for many years.
John farmed with his father and also worked for De Grote Grain later called Beloit Grain in Winnebago. In 1989 he purchased Beloit Grain and changed the name to Winnebago Grain and Feed.
John was a member of the Winnebago Lions Club and the Eugene J. Barloga American Legion Post No 197 in Pecatonica. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed long horned cattle, his dog always by his side and driving his antique cars in the local parades. John loved family and his favorite time was family time.
John is lovingly survived by his wife, Sherrill Bruning and their son, Ryan (Heather) Bruning. John and Sherrill together raised her three children, Steve (Cheri) Pyper, Cindi (Rich) Runte and Jeff (Rachel) Pyper. He has nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
John is predeceased by his infant daughter, Renae Bruning; daughter-in-law, Cristina Pyper; sister, Allene Cox; brother-in-law, Wayne (Butch) Fogel.
A celebration of life will be 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 22, 2023, at the Winnebago Town Hall, 116 S. Benton St, Winnebago.
Cremation rites accorded with a family interment at Pecatonica Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established for the Winnebago Town Hall.
