Byron - John Richardson McGhee, 82, of Byron, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Wednesday, September 30, 2009, from his favorite chair in his home. Born April 1, 1927, in Rockford, the son of Wilford and Grace (Geddes) McGhee. He grew up on a farm in Stillman Valley and lived most of his life in Byron. Graduated from Stillman Valley High School in 1944 and attended the University of Illinois. John was united in marriage to Joanne Howard on May 5, 1953, in United Church of Byron. They enjoyed 56 years of wonderful wedded life together. He was a construction worker for Gregory Anderson Co., of Rockford for over 40 years. John was an active member of United Church of Byron, having served as moderator, steward and a deacon. In addition, he served as alderman for the city of Byron for 31 years. John enjoyed maintaining cars, collecting toy tractors, and dearly loved helping his children and grandchildren with their homework. His family would like to thank the nurses, CNAs, and doctor of Ogle County Hospice for their care and support.

John is lovingly survived by his wife, Joanne McGhee of Byron; daughters, Debbie (Jeff) Laws of Oconto, Wis., Cindy Monkkonen of Minneapolis, Minn., Karen (Dave) de Valk of Alpharetta, Ga., and Kathee Swanlund of Dallas, Ga.; grandchildren, Kayla, Lindsey, Alyssa, Maria, Jordan, Jacob, Morgan, and Abbi; great-granddaughter, Helaina; brother, Warren (Connie) McGhee of Stillman Valley; sister, Mabel "Sis" Boyer Kaderli of Byron; brothers-in-law Tom (Sharen) Howard of Port St. Lucie, Fla. and Bill Howard of Rockford; sister-in-law, Helen (Jay) Stroup, of Port St. Lucie; several nieces and nephews; and dear poodle and companion, Molly.

He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Robert (Marian) McGhee; and brothers-in-law, Ken "Blu" Boyer and Jerry Kaderli.

Funeral Information

Service is at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 6, 2009, in United Church of Byron, 701 W. Second Street, Byron, with the Rev. Mike Mulberry officiating. Burial in Byron Cemetery. Visitation 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, October 5, 2009, in United Church of Byron.
