
Obituary for John Turner Winter
Winnebago – John Turner Winter, 85, of Winnebago, died Monday, March 5, 2018 at Generations At Neighbors in Byron. Born January 16, 1933 in Hanover, IL the son of George Orma and Sarah Elizabeth (Turner) Winter. Graduated from Hanover High School in 1950, Wisconsin State College in Platteville, WI with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts in 1956, and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL with a Master of Science in Education in 1962. John married Mary Louise Kirby on June 14, 1958 at St. James Catholic Church in Lee, IL. A veteran in the United States Army serving from July 15, 1953 to June 3, 1955 in the Military Police at Sandia Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico. John was a school teacher at Stockton High School, Wilson Middle School, and the Rockford Area Vocational Center at Jefferson High School. He also worked part-time through Southern Illinois University at the Chicago Fire Academy in Chicago, Builders Square in Rockford, Bud’s Sunoco in Winnebago and the Genandt Funeral Home in Winnebago. A member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Pecatonica, Win-Bur-Sew Fire Department, Winnebago Community Unit School District 323 school board, Eugene J. Barloga American Legion Post #197 in Pecatonica, and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. He enjoyed woodworking, woodcarving including making and carving canes and walking sticks to donate them to veterans, fund raisers, requests and people at need. He also enjoyed building and flying kites, researching family genealogy, researching and compiling a list of military veterans from Winnebago, IL, and he researched, photographed and wrote a book about the stain glass windows at St. Mary Catholic Church in Pecatonica. The highlight of John’s life was being “Bomp” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Mary Winter of Winnebago, sons, Patrick (Martha) Winter of Winnebago, Timothy (Melody) Winter of Marengo; daughter-in-law, Kristine Winter of Rockford; grandchildren, Kelly (Adam) Viel, Ryan (Sarah) Winter, Hannah Winter, Hailey Winter, Zachary Winter; great-grandchildren, Emmalyn and Landon Viel, Michael Winter; sister, Kay (Allen) Smith of Chadwick; several nephews and nieces.
John is predeceased by his son Michael John Winter, brothers George Forrest Winter, James Waddington Winter.
Funeral Mass 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 126 W. 5th St., Pecatonica with Rev. Joseph F. Jaskierny officiating. Private interment at St. James Calvary Cemetery in Lee, IL. Visitation 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2018, at Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago.
