Rockford - Joyce E. Melito, 69, of Rockford, died Friday morning, June 24, 2011, in her home, with her children at her bedside, following a very courageous battle with cancer. Born on August 22, 1941, in Rockford, the daughter of LaVerne B. and Rosina M. (Viel) Wunschel. Graduated from Winnebago High School in 1959. Joyce married her former husband, Robert Melito, on October 14, 1961. She began her professional career at Ingersoll and took a brief hiatus to raise her children. Joyce resumed her career at the Winnebago School District, and in 1977 began working at Sundstrand, retiring in 2004. After retirement she returned to Sundstrand as a contract employee for Ingenium, working there until her illness. Joyce enjoyed golfing with her Wazoom Golf League, being a fashionista - loving to shop, dining with friends, traveling - especially enjoying Florida's beaches, gardening and shopping at farmer's markets. She will be remembered by family and friends for unofficially adopting any and all little ones as her own.
Joyce is lovingly survived by her son, Mike Melito of Loves Park; daughter, Michele "Micki" (Terry) Smith of Pecatonica; grandchildren, Jake and Jorie Smith of Winnebago; mother, Rosy Wunschel of Winnebago; sister, Sandi (Ben) Milburn of Winnebago; niece, Jodi (Barry Backes) Hermans of Rockford; dear cousins, Jacki, Nancy and Eleanor; and other family members. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Bert and Blanche Wunschel, and Harm and Ella Viel; father, LaVerne; and special aunt and uncle, Sis and Harold Burkhart.
The family thanks Northern Illinois Hospice, particularly, Joyce's nurse, Val, and CNA's, Emma and Kristin for their care and compassion.
