
Obituary for Klaus Schaap
Winnebago - Klaus Schaap, 72, of Winnebago, died Tuesday morning, May 9, 2006, in his home, after a lengthy illness. Born August 9, 1933, in Nordhorn, Germany, the son of Moritz and Erna (Oppenheimer) Schaap. Leaving Germany with his family at the onset of WWII, Klaus grew up in the Netherlands. He survived the Holocaust by hiding in war torn Holland. Klaus served in the Royal Dutch Army before coming to the United States in 1954. He then served in the U.S. Navy. Klaus married Evalyn Gottschalk on June 15, 1958, in Washington, New Jersey. Coming to Winnebago in 1960, he was self-employed as a cattle dealer until succumbed by illness. Klaus was a longstanding member of Temple Beth-El, a member of B'nai Brith, Winnebago Lions Club, and Winnebago Farm Bureau.
Klaus is lovingly survived by his wife, Evalyn Schaap of Winnebago, children, David (Molly) Schaap of Rockford, Karen (Randy) Gillett of Oak Park and Susan Schaap of Colorado Springs, Colo., and grandchildren, Rachel and Michael Gillett of Oak Park and Andria Schaap of Rockford.
Funeral Information
Service is at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 11, 2006, in Temple Beth-El, 1203 Comanche Drive, Rockford, with Rabbi Binah B. Wing officiating. Burial in Hebrew Cemetery in Rockford. Shiva (visitation) is at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, in the family's home.
