
Obituary for Lester R. Stein
German Valley - Lester R. Stein, 94, of German Valley, died Friday afternoon, August 18, 2006, in Stephenson Nursing Center, in Freeport. Born January 30, 1912 in Alfolky, the son of Henry and Amelia (Wagner) Stein. He served in the U.S. Army's 81st Artillery Division in the Pacific Theatre beginning November 20, 1942 and was active with the occupational forces in Japan until his honorable discharge in January 19, 1946. Lester married Vera Runte on April 20, 1946 in Prairie Dell Presbyterian Church, in rural Shannon. Along with his brother, Nelson, Lester owned and operated Stein Brothers Trucking in German Valley for 30 years. He was a member of German Valley United Methodist Church and a life-long member of the VFW Post 998 in Freeport and the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 679 in Freeport. Lester served 15 years as one of the first firefighters of the German Valley Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing and playing euchre.
Lester is lovingly survived by his sisters-in-law, Mae Stein, of German Valley, Pearl Runte, of WA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lester was predeceased by his wife, Vera Stein, who died on June 14, 1998, brothers, Nelson and William Stein, sister, Margaret Haugh, half-brothers, Fred Thiele and George Stine and half-sister, Emma Toby.

Service at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2006, in German Valley United Methodist Church, 7 Main St., German Valley, with the Rev. Rick Neblock officiating. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, in Freeport. Visitation 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 21, 2006, in Genandt Funeral Home, 145 Church St., German Valley.
