Obituary for Mae B. Stein

German Valley - Mae Belle Stein, 87, of German Valley, died Friday, January 27, 2012, in Stephenson Nursing Center, Freeport. Born on February 28, 1924, in Shannon, the daughter of Erwin and Katherine (Sturtevant) Plock. Mae moved to German Valley in February, 1942 and married Nelson H. Stein on November 17, 1942, in E.U.B. Church parsonage, Florence Station. She worked as a telephone operator in Shannon and German Valley, worked in the post office, and was a bus driver for German Valley and Forreston schools for eight years. She was the bookkeeper for Stein Brothers Trucking for many years. Mae enjoyed babysitting for many families throughout the years. She was a member of German Valley United Methodist Church where she was president of United Methodist Women's Club for 12 years and taught Sunday school for 42 years. Mae loved her community and was awarded the German Valley MVP award in 2003. She was a blessing to all who knew her.

Mae is lovingly survived by her son, Larry (Shirley) Stein of German Valley; daughter, Darlene (Jon) Worley of Machesney Park; six grandchildren, Bill (John Stewart) Stein of St. Louis, Mo., Michelle McKenna of Loves Park, Nicolle (Frank) Carroll of Beloit, Wis., Amy (Bob) Bollon of Lena, Christine (Jerome Gentry) Schnierla of German Valley, and Jonelle (Dustin) Insko of Roscoe; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (Donna) Plock of German Valley; sister, Evelyn Diddens of Freeport; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased by her parents; husband, Nelson on April 28, 1993; and sister, Betty Plock.

Funeral Information

Service at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2012, in German Valley United Methodist Church, 7 Main Street, German Valley, with visitation from 2:00 p.m. until service time; the Rev. David Decker will officiate. Private burial.
