Beloved Dad, Grandpa, Brother and Friend
Pecatonica - Marvin Edward Buttel, 69, of Pecatonica, died Thursday, June 7, 2012, in his home, following a sudden illness. Born September 14, 1942, in Rockford, the son of Edward C. and Mabel M. (Schoonhoven) Buttel. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany, during the Vietnam War. Marvin married Beverly Barnhart; later they divorced. Marvin married Mary M. (Williams) Schmelzer on January 12, 1984, in Freeport. He and his brother, Ron, owned and operated a trucking firm for several years, and then he trucked for Holland Trucking, retiring in 2008. He dearly loved spending time with his family and enjoyed woodworking.
Marvin is lovingly survived by his children, Sheri Tempel of Maryland, Connie Vogt of Reedsburg, Wis., Stephanie Simons of Arizona, and Shawn (Rachel) Schmelzer of LaValle, Wis.; grandchildren, Amber, Ben and Brad Tempel, Jeremy Vogt, Amanda Huenefeld, Morgan Simons, and Autumn and Katelyn Schmelzer; several great-grandchildren; brother, Ronald (Linda) Buttel of Byron; sisters, Marilyn (Chuck) McDuffie of Stillman Valley, Phyllis Murphy of Rockford, and Karen (Jeff) Dietrich of Leaf River; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents; wife, Mary, on May 23, 2002; and grandson, Justin Schmelzer on July 22, 1999.
Funeral Information
Service at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2012, in Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until service time; the Rev. John Hollis, pastor of First Church of the Nazarene, Freeport, will officiate. Burial in Silver Creek Cemetery, German Valley. Cremation rites were accorded.
