Obituary for Melva Ruth Laurberg
Winnebago Melva Ruth Laurberg, 101, of Winnebago, died Saturday, July 8, 2017 in PA Peterson at the Citadel in Rockford. Born January 17, 1916 in Plano, IL, the daughter of Cornell Latham and Vera Hazel (Dickinson) Gale. Graduated from Rockford Senior High School in 1932 at age 16. Melva married Walter William Laurberg on August 14, 1937 on the Gale family farm at the northwest corner of Meridian and Auburn Roads. She was a member of the Burritt Community Church, Burritt United Methodist Women, Burritt Museum Committee, Burritt Busy Bees and Owen Blue Bonnets 4-H Clubs, Kent Valley Grange, Winnebago Garden Club, and the Antique Auto Club. Melva was always busy with gardening, baking, sewing, doing counted cross-stitch, crocheting, weaving and selling rugs.

In January of 2016 Melva celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at PA Peterson.

Melvas family would like to thank all of the caregivers at PA Peterson and Heartland Hospice for their tender loving care.

Melva was blessed with good health, abundant energy, determination, a pure and loving heart and unending generosity. Her warmth and contributions to the community are treasured by many.

Melva is lovingly survived by her son, Otis (Carol Shaffer) Laurberg of Rochester, MN; daughter, Barbara (Harold) Palm of Rockford; grandchildren, Richard (Sijin Xian) Laurberg, Christian (Shannon Russell) Laurberg, Erik (Beth) Palm, Andrew Palm, Alan Palm, Heidi Palm; great-granddaughter, Emily Palm; sister, Rae Saltzgiver-Crull; several nephews and nieces.

Melva is predeceased by her husband, Walter Laurberg; sister, Eleanor Knoll.

Funeral Information

Funeral service 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2017 with a visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Burritt Community Church, 8378 Trask Bridge Rd., Rockford with Rev. Brenda Byrne officiating. Interment in North Burritt Cemetery.
