
Obituary for Melvin August Stykel
Freeport - Melvin August Stykel, 86, of Freeport, formerly of German Valley, died Tuesday morning, September 6, 2011, in FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport. He was born on August 5, 1925, in German Valley, the son of Andy and Lucy (Lubowsky) Stykel. Melvin graduated from Forreston High School in 1943 and attended the University of Illinois, Champaign. He was drafted into the Army following high school graduation, serving in WWII and spent three tours in Germany. Melvin married Barbara Trumpfheller while serving in Germany. He also served in the Korean and Viet Nam wars, retiring as a Major in the Army Signal Corps, on June 1, 1969, after 24 years of military service. Melvin married Dolores (Dohlen) Henzler on June 7, 1975. He was connected with the Boy Scouts for 39 years and served as Scoutmaster for Troop 30, German Valley, for 15 years. He also served as an EMT for the German Valley Fire Department. Melvin was an active member of the Silver Creek Reformed Church and German Valley Lions Club. He was an avid crossword puzzle solver.
Melvin is lovingly survived by his wife, Dolores; son, Bruce Stykel of Middleton, Wis.; grandson, Stephen Stykel of Mendota; and daughter-in-law, Robin Stykel of German Valley. He was predeceased by his parents; first wife, Barbara; sons, Andy and Loren Stykel; and brothers, Lewis and John Stykel.

Memorial service is at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 9, 2011, in Silver Creek Reformed Church, 325 S. Bunker Hill Road, German Valley, with the Rev. Randall P. Knoll, officiating. At Melvin's request, cremation rites will be accorded.
