Winnebago - Shirley E. Leonard, 85, of Winnebago, died Sunday, September 16, 2012, at home, surrounded by her loving family. Born July 28, 1927, in Winnebago, the daughter of Hjalmer and Dorothy (Shellberg) Osberg. Graduated from Winnebago High School in 1945. Shirley married Robert W. Leonard on September 16, 1945, at the Osberg home in Burritt Township. She spent her early years as a farm wife, and raised her family. Later Shirley was employed at Pierce Chemical as a cook and then was known as "the donut lady" at Edward's Apple Orchard West. She also was a nursery attendant at St. Anskar's Church. Shirley was an active member of Burritt Community Church, the Pecatonica Lions Club, and Westfield Card Club. She enjoyed cards, Bingo, Scrabble, reading and completing her daily crossword puzzle.
Shirley is lovingly survived by her son, Jeff (Denise) Leonard of Pecatonica; daughters, Kris Markin of Tampa, Fla., Diane (Larry) Jones of Muskegon, Mich., LuAnn Fraley of Winnebago and Deb (Jon) Nicholson of Pecatonica; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and lifelong friend, Kay Mauk. Predeceased by her parents; husband, Robert on December 14, 1990; sons-in-law, Jon Markin and Terry Fraley; brother, Stan Osberg; and honorary sister, Betty Finley.

Service at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 19, 2012, in Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago, with the Rev. Larry Moody, pastor of Burritt Community Church, Rockford, officiating. Burial in Willwood Burial Park, Rockford. Visitation 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 18, 2012, in the funeral home.
