
Obituary for Shirley Jean (Calhoun) Burkhart
Shirley Jean (Calhoun) Burkhart, 86, of Winnebago, passed away with her loving family by her side after an accidental fall, Friday, June 24, 2022, at Mercyhealth Hospital in Rockford. She was born September 2, 1935 in Rochelle, the daughter of James Morris and Anna Maxine (Rasmussen) Calhoun. She graduated from Winnebago High School in 1953. Shirley married Arthur “Art” Roy Burkhart on November 20, 1954 at the Seward Congregational Church.
Shirley worked at Barber-Colman Company in Rockford then at Bill Doran Company, a floral distribution company in Rockford. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Winnebago. She enjoyed tending to her flowers and doing crafts. Shirley’s granddaughters and great-granddaughters were very special to her. She loved spending time with them and watching their basketball and soccer games.
Shirley is survived by her loving son, Dan (Laurie) Burkhart of Winnebago; granddaughters, Heidi (Andrew) Harris of Roscoe, Holli Burkhart of Loves Park; great-granddaughters, Taylor and Natalie Harris; brother, James “Mick” Calhoun of Rockford; sister, Karen Koch and friend Rick of Sarasota, FL; brother-in-law, Jim Swigart of Winnebago; several nephews and nieces; devoted friends, Larry (Kay) Christen; special neighbors, Cal (Kathy) Miley.
Shirley is predeceased by her loving husband of over 64 years, Art Burkhart; son, Randy Burkhart; brother, LeRoy Calhoun; sisters, Delores “Dee” Swigart, Patricia “Patsy” Cline; sisters-in-law, Linda Calhoun, Arlene Calhoun; brothers-in-law, Raeford “Shorty” Cline, Harold (Sis) Burkhart, Lester (Elsie) Burkhart; nephews, Alan Burkhart, Mike Cunningham.
Funeral service 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 1, 2022, at Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago with Reverend Lisa Lopez-Meyer pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Winnebago officiating. Visitation 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 30, 2022, at the funeral home.
