
Obituary for Steve Wyllys Straley
Steve Wyllys Straley, 68, of Winnebago, died Friday, December 31, 2021, at home with his loving family by his side. He was born January 17, 1953 in Rockford, the son of Dale Francis and Alta Wendella (Gross) Straley. He graduated from Winnebago High School in 1971.
Steve was a partner with his father in farming until Dale retired and then he was a mechanic for Truck Country in Rockford for ten years. He then worked as a parts salesman for Transam Truck & Trailer Parts in Rockford and also transported parts for Chrysler Assembly Plant in Belvidere. He also operated Steve’s Handyman Services which was general household maintenance with a slogan “I can do that!”.
Steve often would help people load items purchased at auctions by Hack’s Auction & Realty Services in Pecatonica and the “Pec Thing”. He also helped his family with Straley’s Lunch Wagon at Hack’s auctions. Steve did leather work making belts, dog leashes, horse leads and doing leather repairs. He loved horses and trail rides up to 100 miles.
Steve is lovingly survived by his mother, Alta Straley of Winnebago; sister, Gail (Tim) Possley of Erie, IL; nephews, Joe Possley, Jim Possley; niece, Anna (Ryan) O’Donnell; great-nephews, Danny, Michael and Dillon O’Donnell; several uncles, aunts and cousins.
Steve is predeceased by his father Dale Straley and Steve will be joining cousin Josh Myers who he often camped and fished with.
A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., with a memorial visitation starting at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 7, 2022, at Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago with Pastor Tim Spickler of New Life Bible Church near Winnebago officiating. Cremation rites accorded with interment at Winnebago Cemetery.
