
Obituary for William "Bill" Sherman Westphal
Winnebago – William “Bill” Sherman Westphal, 90, of Winnebago, passed Thursday, November 30, 2017 at River Bluff Nursing Home in Rockford. Born July 29, 1927, in Winnebago, the son of Grant and Bernice (Sherman) Westphal. Attended Smith Grade School and graduated from Winnebago High School in 1945. Bill married Elsie M. Carlson on February 13, 1949, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rockford. He farmed the Westphal family farm until retiring in 1990 and then worked part-time at Genandt Funeral Home in Winnebago and for The DeLong Co. in Winnebago, truly retiring in 2008. Bill was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rockford serving on the Elder and Trustees Board. He also served Burritt Township as trustee, the Winnebago School Board, the Winnebago County Dairy Herd Improvement Board, the board of directors of the Winnebago County Farm Bureau, the Winnebago County Extension Council working on the livestock committee for the Winnebago County 4-H Fair and was a member of the Model T Ford Club of Rockford serving as president and secretary.
The family would like to thank River Bluff Nursing Home and Northern Illinois Hospice for taking care of Bill.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Diane (Wes) Newman; grandchildren, Kyle and Melissa Newman; great-grandson, Kowen Newman; daughter-in-law, Grace Westphal; brothers-in-law, Raymond (Jan) Carlson, Harold Bridgeland; sisters-in-law, Lois Westphal, Jean Smith Meissen, Letica Carlson, Darlene Carlson; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
Bill is predeceased by his parents; wife of 66 years, Elsie Westphal in 2015; son, David Westphal; grandson, Karac Westphal; brothers, Richard and Robert Westphal; brothers-in-law, Warren and Roger Carlson, Floyd Dickinson, Ted Meissen; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Westphal, Ruby Bridgeland, Harriet Dickinson.
Memorial Visitation 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 10, 2017, at Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago. Private interment. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established. For an online obituary and tributes go to www.genandtfuneralhome.com.
