
Obituary for William "Bill" Vincent Clark Griswold
William “Bill” Vincent Clark Griswold, 84, of Winnebago, died Saturday, August 27, 2022 at Medina Nursing Center in Durand. He was born October 3, 1937 in Rockford the son of James Edgar and Ruth (Clark) Griswold. He graduated from Oregon High School in 1955. Bill was a machinist in the United States Navy serving from August 8, 1955 to February 1, 1976 aboard USS ships Ranger CVA-61, Frontier AD-25, O’Bannon DD-450 and USS submarines Theodore Roosevelt SSBN-600, Sam Houston SSBN-609 and George C. Marshall SSBN-654. He was a Nuclear Engineer, Senior Instructor at Groton, CT and retired as a Senior Chief Machinist’s Mate. After retiring from the U. S. Navy Bill worked as a machinist at Roper Whitney in Rockford and Kelly Springfield Tire Company in Freeport.
Bill married Shirley Lou Hayenga on March 19, 1961 in Rockford. He graduated Phi Theta Kappa from Rock Valley College in Rockford with an Associate in Applied Science in Quality Assurance Technology on May 15, 1986. Bill was a member of the Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8739, Oregon American Legion Post 97, Durand American Legion Gold Star Post 676 and Winnebago Masonic Lodge 745 A.F. & A.M.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Dawn (Michael) Collins; son, Dan (Staci) Griswold; granddaughters, Samantha Griswold, D’elaine Bejgier; great-grandson, Gatlin Griswold; sister, Viola Garver; several nephews and nieces.
Bill is predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Griswold; brother, Edward Griswold.
Visitation 10:00 a.m., followed by Masonic Rites at 11:00 a.m. and then a Funeral Service all on Saturday, September 3, 2022, at Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago, with Pastor Tim Spickler of New Life Bible Church officiating.
