Beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather

Winnebago - Willis G. Kersten, 91, of Winnebago, was born March 13, 1924, in Ashton, to Harry and Luella (Danekas) Kersten, died Thursday, March 26, 2015 in Wesley Willows, Rockford. Willis graduated from Ashton High School in 1942 and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Italy during WWII. After his service time, he attended ISU, graduating in 1952, later receiving his master's degree from NIU. Willis married Margaret Wilson in 1952, in the Second Presbyterian Church, Bloomington. He taught in Waynesville, Poplar Grove, and Woodstock, before coming to the Winnebago School District, where he taught and held administrative positions for 31 years in both the Seward and Winnebago schools. Will played basketball in his younger years, always enjoyed watching all sports, gardening, fishing, concerts, attending his grandkids sports events, and after retirement, taking many trips with Marge, and visiting with family and friends. He belonged to the American Legion Post No. 197 of Pecatonica, Winnebago County Farm Bureau, Winnebago United Methodist Church, Gold and Silver potluck group and was an avid blood donor.

Willis is lovingly survived by his wife, Margaret, of 60 years; daughter, Laurie (Ray) Patyk of Elgin; son, Jeff (Cheryl) Kersten of Winnebago; granddaughters, Ashley Kersten and Cortney Starnes of Winnebago; grandsons, Brad Patyk of Norfolk, Va. and Zach Starnes of Rockford; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dick and Janet Wilson of Bloomington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, LaVerne Kersten; and sister, Helen Miller.

Funeral Information

Memorial service is at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, March 28, 2015, in Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until service time; Pastor Matt Smith, of Winnebago United Methodist Church, will officiate. Cremation rites have been accorded. Private burial in Twelve Mile Grove Cemetery.
