
Obituary for Richard G. Westphal
Fountain Hills, Ariz. - Richard G. Westphal, 79, of Fountain Hills, Ariz., formerly of Winnebago, Ill, completed his journey home Tuesday, November 27, 2012, in his daughter and son-in-law's home, lovingly surrounded by his family as he courageously battled with cancer. Born February 7, 1933, in Winnebago, the son of Grant and Bernice (Sherman) Westphal. Graduated from Winnebago High School in 1950. Served in the U.S. Army from July 8, 1953 to June 6, 1955. Richard married Carolyn Dimirack on June 18, 1955, in Colonial Heights, Va. He was a lifelong resident of Winnebago and a dairy farmer for many years, retiring in 1998. Richard was chosen as Winnebago County's Outstanding Young Farmer in 1962. He was a lifelong active member of First Presbyterian Church of Winnebago, having served on the board of trustees and elder. He also served on the Dairy Herd Improvement Association and 20 years on the Winnebago School Board, 17 years as treasurer. Richard and Carolyn enjoyed wintering in Fountain Hills, Ariz., until they retired and became full time residents in 2008. Richard served on the board of directors, president and vice-president for the homeowner's association at the Villas of Club Mirage Fountain Hills from 2000 to 2010. Richard was an avid sports fan...Go Cubs, Go Bears!!!, however, his main passion was demonstrated in his life as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Richard is lovingly survived by his daughter, Denise (Paul) Dallmann of Scottsdale, Ariz.; son, James (Cheryl) Westphal of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, CPL Michael Dallmann of USMC 29 Palms, Calif., Jennifer (PFC Joe) Wells of Glendale, Ariz., and Brittney and Haylie Westphal of Denver, Colo.; stepgrandson, Dustin (Stephanie) Kirby of Rockford, Ill.; stepgreat-grandchildren, Taytem and Noah Kirby of Rockford; future great-granddaughter, Lillian Wells; brother, William (Elsie) Westphal of Rockford; sister-in-law, Lois Westphal of Winnebago; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, wife, Carolyn, on April 19, 2010; brother, Robert Westphal; and stepgrandson, Derek Kirby.
Funeral Information
Service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2012, in First Presbyterian Church, 208 W. Winnebago St., Winnebago, with the Rev. Steve Shullanberger officiating. Final resting place will be in Winnebago Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, December 7, 2012 in Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago.
